Getting Up When the Alarm Goes Off

“Beep ! Beep! ” There goes my alarm! I groan and hit the snooze.

Getting up in the morning is extremely difficult for me. Sometimes I press the snooze for hours. Sometimes I get up and freshen up for the day and then decide to go right back to bed. Then, there are those miraculous days when I get out of bed on time, and my day turns out to be productive . Do you struggle with getting up when your alarm goes off? I know I do and I have tried some different things to help me get up in the mornings. Try out these tips and see if they help!

1. Trick Your Mind

In the winter (when I was crazy) I occasionally got up at 5 AM to go to the gym to run. While I brushed my teeth and washed my face, I told myself I could take a nap later in the day. I don’t think I ever actually took a nap later, but the assurance of more sleep gave me motivation. Find what mind trick works for you! Whether is a reward or something else, it just might be the thing to help you.

 2. Avoid the Snooze

Have you ever noticed that the snooze button is almost always the biggest and easiest button to find and hit? I honestly don’t know what those manufacturers were thinking! When I press the snooze the first time it can cause me to get into the cycle of hitting it a second, third, fourth, or fifth time. If you get out of bed immediately instead of hitting “snooze”, you may find that it gets you up better.

3. The “Across the Room” Trick

This is one of the most effective of all of these tips for me: put your alarm clock across the room! It gets you out of the bed, makes you think about what you are doing, and wakes you up. If you are the type of person who won’t get up for an alarm clock, get an alarm that won’t turn off  automatically and maybe even buy a super annoying one.

4. Get an App

My older brother uses a free app called “I Can’t Wake Up!” It makes you solve puzzles to turn off the alarm.  Check it out on Amazon.

5. Get Motivated

Sometimes you just have to get committed and motivated to get up in the morning. Before you go to bed, try telling yourself that you will get up the next day when your alarm goes off…and make sure you mean it!

6. Avoid the Bed

Once you get out of bed, you want to stay out of bed! Avoid touching or sitting on your bed after you get up . Also avoid making up your bed. Do this until you are fully awake and beyond the danger.  😁

7. Make a Schedule

If your schedule relies on your wake up time, it can provide extra motivation.  Look at how to make a schedule here.

8. Be Realistic

If you go to bed at 11:00, you will not be able to get up super early.  Try to base your wake-up time off of when you go to sleep.  Also, if you are accustomed to waking up at 8:00 and want to start waking up at 5:30, try to ease into it. For example, try to wake up at 7:30, then 6:30 the next day, then 5:30 the day after that.
