How to Make a Rainbow-Layered Cake

Rainbows and dragons? The two don’t seem to go together, but my sister likes both. So when her birthday came up, we decided to combine them into a cake! It was a fun (and a bit nerve-wracking) process, so I thought you all might like to see how I made it. 😊

Rainbows…

The first part was the rainbow inside- the cake itself. I did a quick Google search for rainbow cakes and saw that most have 6 layers: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. My sister and I went crazy, though, and substituted neon pink for red. 😂

We used this vanilla cake recipe (1.5-ing it) and then separated the batter into six bowls. (The recipe worked well, but it was difficult to dye since it can’t be mixed too much.)

Then, we dyed each bowl with a different color using food dye.

After that, we put one bowl of batter at a time in an 8-inch round and baked it for about 13 minutes.

After all the layers cooled, we iced and stacked them!

…and Dragons

Then, we had to cover up the surprise with my sister’s other favorite thing: dragons. Specifically, dragons from the Wings of Fire book series.

We printed out the stencil and my little sister cut out the dragon symbol from the page while I iced the cake with yellow frosting.

Then, we placed the stencil onto the cake and generously sprinkled red sugar sprinkles over it. To get the sprinkles off without ruining the look, I blew on it (we made a mess). If you don’t want to blow on it, you can probably use a hair dryer on a low setting.

The Party and Cake Reveal

We set up the table and streamers and she had a great birthday party! Everyone liked it when we cut into the cake, and we saw the surprise inside:)

All in all, the cake was a hit and everyone had a great time!

  2. That looks like a great cake…. at Christmas you could make a cake with the layers being RED, YELLOW,BLACK and WHITE… then stencil the nativity on top!
